So I went to see Dananananaykroyd’s ‘secret gig’ last night, but I want to rave about Tall Ships instead. These lovely boys are fast becoming one of my favourite bands of the moment. I saw them a few months ago support Tubelord and was truly impressed, but last night I literally didn’t want them to stop playing.
Please please please, I urge you if you ever have the opportunity to see these guys live, DO! I cannot recommend them enough.
As for Dananan, I have to admit I was a little disappointed. I caught them last year at SWN and loved them, but last night was new material and it didn’t grab me. Of course a band like Dananan, who make so much noise, are difficult to hear new material for the first time live, so I won’t be writing them off just yet. But following Tall Ships it felt like an anti-climax.
The crowd was terribly small. At the start of Tall Ships it was literally me, my boyfriend, plus dananan watching, which was secretly quite cool, but a very disappointing turnout indeed.
Tall Ships saved the night. I’d have paid the £7 just to see them.
Tubelord/Tall Ships @ CAI…
…were fucking brilliant. Yes, it was necessary to swear because they were indeed that good. I hadn’t really heard much of Tall Ships stuff before but I was more than pleasanly surprised. They also did a cover of Craig David’s ‘Seven Days’ which was more than a little bit incredible. Tubelord absolutely destroyed it as expected. (I obvs mean the good ‘destroyed’ in this context) Jo Prendergast (front man) is so incredibly sexual when playing guitar he made me a little weak at the knees. (That’s right, I just used the phrase ‘made me weak at the knees seriously, I’m ashamed of it, but he really did) and they’re now a 4 piece! Band member 4 doesn’t wear shoes on stage it would seem… but the whole 4 piece thing works well…I think…
Plus i got to experience all this at the absolutely wonderful Cardiff Arts Institute. Ok, so it’s a bit pretentious and screams “LOOK AT HOW INDIE I AM” as soon as you walk in the door; with lego on the walls, comicbook style art everywhere and beanbangs. And the set up is a bit odd as far as a music venue goes… but I think I fell in love with the place a bit.
